The Black Irish Band perform their original song, "The Fate of Miss Gregg". Band member and songwriter, Patrick Michael Karnahan, wrote the song after reading a book on California Shipwrecks. In 1999 the author visited the site of the of the wreck off Centerfield Beach California, near Ferndale. All that remains of the tragic story is a large cross that faces the ocean, a monument to all that had died in 1860. It has been said that the grave of Miss Gregg is located in a small cove near the wreck site, unmarked. The song appears as the last song on the Black Irish Band 12th album, Into the Arms of the Sea. If you listen to the words of the song you will here- "Into the Arms of the Sea". Into the Arms of the Sea, has been the largest selling alum to date for the Black Irish, and is sold in many maritime museums across America.
The song was written as a very romanticized true story of the events that lead to the death of a beautiful young women. The actions of Miss Gregg and brother were documented by the captain of the ship, who had begged the two to leave the ship while there was still time. Strange is the fact that they tied themselves to the inside of the Wheelhouse, and thought they could survived the large crashing waves. The author was quite taken by the fact that the next morning a group of sailors and townspeople could walk right out to the very spot where the ship ran aground. As in the song, the fog lifted, and there was this lifeless body of a once beautiful girl. All night long many witnesses could hear the young girl call out over the sound of the crashing waves.
